Tooth Fillings
We provide both amalgam (Silver) and Composite (white) in our practice. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Dr. Surles and his team will be happy to discuss advantages and disadvantages and which treatment is best for you and your health smile.
Advantages of Silver fillings:
Silver fillings have many advantages. There are very durable, lasting years. Disadvantages would include; color and potentially can crack your tooth thru expansion and contract of the material. Silver filling do contain mercury but the mercury does not leak out from the filling.
Advantages of Tooth-Colored Restorations
There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations. Resin fillings are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger. Resin fillings are also more attractive than silver fillings. Disadvantages would include; wearing more quickly than your natural teeth, cost and possible increase sensitivity to biting and cold.
Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Restoration
You can have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations (composites or crowns). This process requires two appointments.
Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger and the tooth is protected!
